GW Notes: I went to college in Walla Walla and our baseball coach's office was next to the golf coach's office. We’d sneak in and pilfer golf passes to the local course (Veterans Memorial Golf Course) and go play 9-holes after baseball practice. Veterans Memorial is the course where I learned how to play golf, the nuances of the game and how to play for a score. One of my best buddies happened to be on the golf team and he was a huge influence in taking me from a baseball player interested in how far I could hit a golf ball, to a player who thinks about the best way to play golf. Strategy, taking one's medicine, etiquette, and the like. Anyway, all this transpired at Veterans Memorial. By the way, Veterans Memorial is one of the nicer municipal courses you’ll play. The layout offers plenty of variety with doglegs, elevation changes, native trees, and pesky bunkers all part of the fun. It sits on a hill so there are some scenic views of the Walla Walla area, and all the expected amenities are available. In addition, Veterans Memorial GC is home to the Wine Country amphitheater. Throughout the summer months, live concerts are hosted at the amphitheater including Blues Traveler, ZZ Top, and Jackson Browne to name a few.
