Links Golf in Central Washington
The Highlander Golf Club is a classic Scottish highlands type of course staying true to the land and heritage of Scottish links style golf. Routed by golf architect, John Steidel and built by the artistic hand of Jim Haley (of Bandon Dunes fame), the 18-hole, 6,466-yard course is carved atop a cliff nearly 900 feet above the mighty Columbia River and offers sweeping views of the river gorge and surrounding landscapes. So precarious is the perch, that the scorecard offers a warning to golfers on the 9th hole; “If your ball ends up in the ravine - Do Not Attempt to Retrieve - EXTREME DANGER.” However if you need to be told not to venture into that ravine, then you, my friend, have bigger issues than a lost ball! Located in east Wenatchee, just 150 miles from Seattle and 170 miles from Spokane, the Highlander Golf Club resides on the Eastern slopes of the Cascade mountain range and is easily accessible from anywhere in the state.
The course was designed in the mold of the classic Scottish Highlands courses, and due to the exposed nature of its hilltop location, the weather (specifically the wind) can be more of a hazard than the deep pot bunkers or surrounding fescue grass. But like all true links layouts, the fronts of the greens are generally hazard free allowing players the opportunity to play low, boring, “bump & run” shots and chase the ball onto the greens. Once on the greens, players will be treated with medium-fast, well-manicured, and multi-tiered surfaces.
To compliment the golf course is a large, well-stocked pro-shop. Also part of the amenities is a full-service restaraunt. In addition to a tasty menu and cold beverages, it sports an outdoor patio offering majestic views of the Columbia River and surrounding terrain. All told, the highlander Golf Club provides an outstanding mix of golf and amenities. Add its convenient central Washington location and its popularity as a destination for group and corporate outings, and the Highander golf course should definitely be added to your "must play" list.
